Installation instructions

Chrome, Edge, or Brave (desktop)⌄
  1. Make sure your bookmarks bar is visible (Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows, ⌘+Shift+B on Mac).
  2. Drag the “Save to Cookedit” button above into your bookmarks bar.
  3. Done! When viewing any recipe, click the bookmark to save it.
Firefox (desktop)⌄
  1. Make sure your bookmarks toolbar is visible — right-click the toolbar area and choose “Bookmarks Toolbar”.
  2. Drag the “Save to Cookedit” button above into your bookmarks toolbar.
  3. Done! Click it on any recipe page to save.
Safari (Mac)⌄
  1. Make sure the Favorites bar is visible — go to View → Show Favorites Bar.
  2. Drag the “Save to Cookedit” button above into your Favorites bar.
  3. Done! Click it on any recipe page to save.
Safari (iPhone / iPad)⌄

Mobile Safari doesn't support dragging bookmarks, so this takes a few extra steps.

  1. First, copy the save button code below.
  2. Bookmark any page in Safari — tap the Share button (△), then “Add Bookmark.”
  3. Open your Bookmarks — tap the book icon, then tap “Edit.”
  4. Find the bookmark you just created and tap it to edit it.
  5. Tap the URL field, select all (triple-tap), and paste.
  6. Give it a name like “Save to Cookedit” and tap Done.
  7. From now on, open any recipe in Safari, then tap Bookmarks and run this one.
Chrome (Android)⌄
  1. Copy the save button code below.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (…) then “Bookmarks.”
  3. Tap the “+” button to add a new bookmark.
  4. In the URL field, delete the existing URL and paste.
  5. Give it a name and save.
  6. To use it: navigate to a recipe, open Bookmarks, and tap “Save to Cookedit.”

Questions

Is this safe?

Yes. The save button is a tiny piece of JavaScript that only runs when you click it. It reads the recipe page you're currently viewing and sends it to Cookedit. It can't access other websites, read your passwords, or do anything outside the page you've chosen to save. It works the same way “Pin to Pinterest” and “Save to Pocket” have worked for over a decade.

How does it work?

When you click the bookmark, it captures the fully-rendered HTML from the page you're viewing — the same content your browser already loaded — and sends it to Cookedit's servers for recipe extraction. Because your browser does the rendering, it works even on sites that block automated scrapers.

What if it doesn't capture the recipe?

Some pages are paywalled or load content in ways that may not capture cleanly. If that happens, copy the recipe text and use the From Text input instead.

How do I remove it?

Right-click the bookmark in your bookmarks bar and choose “Delete” (or “Remove”). That's it.
